Seeing the World . . . Sam's Photography

The disciplines involved in photography are great antidotes for rushing through life. Taking great photographs is a never ending exploration of light, shape, movement, color, composition, mood….the list goes on and on, limited only by our willingness to pay attention, to hone our skills and to imagine what might never have been seen before. One of my favorite photos is the one of lavender in this gallery. I was in the Provence region of France at the height of lavender season. Of course there were hundreds of postcads with lavender fields and wonderful Provencal sky, but those shots had already been taken. So, I asked myself what else wanted to be seen. Only then did I begin to notice the effect a light breeze had on the individual lavender stalks. I used a long exposure to capture the feeling of gentle movement. The bottom of the stalks are in focus, rooted in the ground, while the tops are slightly blurred. Portrait of lavender.

I like to think of organizations and individuals in the same way – what is happening that no one else has noticed? What or who wants to be seen? It’s so easy to race by important events in our lives; photographs capture a single moment and call for us to stop and look just as poetry asks us to stop and listen.
